About Sophie

Smiling Sophie

I'm a mom and a writer. For many years now, those twin identities have shaped the way I look at the world and the way I spend my time. I write for young adults and for grown-ups, and I tend to resist genre distinctions. I've written literary, romance, crime, mystery, thriller and I'm pretty sure I'm not done trying new things yet.

But what about AFTERTIME? What the hell is it, exactly? When I started the book I thought I was writing a horror novel. The editorial team has considered lots of labels, including Urban Fantasy, Romantic Sci-fi, and the one we finally settled on—Dystopian Fiction.

It's set in a post-apocalyptic world. There are zombies. There are scenes of pure, and occasionally even campy, horror. There's sex.

But in my view, this series—like everything I write—is about character. I've introduced Cass Dollar, a young woman with an excruciating past and some very big problems in the present and a lot of doubts about the future. She is a mother, and motherhood informs every breath she takes and every decision she makes. She is also passionate, needful, and as determined as she is desperate.

Laura Benedict, one of my favorite writers of horror, makes the point that apocalyptic fiction has long been dominated by male authors. "From H.G. Wells to Max Brooks to Cormac McCarthy, the End Times have always belonged to the boys," she writes in her generous summary of my book. "Aftertime gives an explosive voice to the other half of the planet's population: this is the apocalypse battled head-on by a heroine who not only kicks ass, but is driven by an instinct that only a woman can know."

I hope you'll enjoy the story.
